Product description

The one thing standing between your family and the next outage. The human body can go three weeks without food. Without water, three days. When the grid goes down, municipal pumps lose pressure within hours, boil-water notices follow, and bottled water is the first thing to leave the shelves.

When everything fails, this works. No power, no batteries, no chemicals. Put the lower end in any fresh water source, drink through it, or fill a bottle. A hollow-fiber membrane and an activated carbon stage do the work.

Built for the moments that matter. 3.5 oz, small enough for a glovebox, up to 130 gallons per filter, stored dry it keeps for years. One per person, one for the vehicle.

72 hours. Then the water's gone.

Most homes have three bottles. A family of four needs twelve gallons for three days. That is the math: one gallon per person per day (Ready.gov).

  1. H 0

Grid down. Pumps switch to backup, if any.

  2. H 6

Backup fuel runs low at smaller stations.

  3. H 24

Pressure drops. Boil-water notices go out.

  4. H 48

    Bottled water sold out locally.

  5. H 72

Stored water gone in most homes.

A street during a blackout. Dramatization.
4.5 million
homes without power, Texas, February 2021 (ERCOT). Boil-water notices for days, often without power to boil.
7 weeks
without tap water in Asheville, NC after Hurricane Helene, 2024.

Both events are documented in public reports. Scene images on this site are labeled as dramatizations.

How it works

Four stages, zero power.

  1. Intake

Put the lower end into any fresh water: creek, rain barrel, pool, a tap under a boil-water notice. Drink through the mouthpiece or fill a bottle.

  2. Hollow-fiber filtration

Water passes through a bundle of hollow fibers with pores far smaller than bacteria and protozoa. Sediment and microplastics stay outside.

  3. Carbon stage

An activated carbon block reduces chlorine taste and odor.

  4. Clean output

No waiting, no charging, nothing to replace for up to 130 gallons. Blow back through it after use, let it dry, store it.

Pore size, flow rate and capacity are stated from the lab report once published. Not for viruses, chemicals or salt water.

What the filter removes

Bacteria (pathogenic and fecal)

E. coli, Salmonella, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella, Campylobacter. Why it matters: after floods and sewer backups these are the first contaminants in municipal water, and the reason boil-water notices go out.

Parasites and protozoa

Giardia, Cryptosporidium. Why it matters: chlorine does not kill Cryptosporidium reliably. Filtration does.

Microplastics

Fibers and fragments down to the membrane's pore size. Why it matters: they are now found in most surface water and many tap samples.

Sediment, silt and turbidity

Sand, rust, organic matter, cloudiness. Why it matters: murky water is what you get from a rain barrel, a pool or a creek after a storm.

Chlorine taste and odor

Reduced by the activated carbon stage. Why it matters: kids drink what tastes normal.

Straight answer

What it does. What it doesn't.

Every filter straw has limits. Most brands leave them off the box. Here are ours.

What it does

  • Removes 99.99% of bacteria and protozoa, including E. coli, Salmonella, Giardia and Cryptosporidium
  • Removes sediment, silt and microplastics
  • Reduces chlorine taste and odor with its carbon stage
  • Works on fresh water: creek, rain barrel, pool, a tap under a boil-water notice
  • Needs no power, batteries or chemicals

What it does not do

  • Does not remove viruses. Boil the water or add purification tablets as well
  • Does not remove dissolved chemicals or heavy metals
  • Does not make salt water drinkable
  • Not for water from industrial or chemical runoff

Know your gear's limits before you need it. Layered with tablets for viruses, it covers what most boil-water notices are about.

Tool · how long one filter lasts

One filter. About six months for one adult.

Each filter handles up to 130 gallons. At one gallon a day, that is roughly six months for one person. That is why we say one per person, plus one for the car. Tell us your household and we'll show what you'd otherwise need to store.

Tested it at a creek near me

Small, light straw filter with a bottle thread at the bottom, all at an affordable price. I would have given five stars if there were replacement cartridges too, I hope they come soon. I did a first test at a creek near me and actually had the impression the water tasted less musty. Imagination?!

Coming on my long trail runs

Haven't had to use the compact water filter yet, but I'll take it on longer trail runs, because clean water isn't always on the route. What I really like is how compact and light it is.

Questions before you order

Why do I need this when I can just boil water?

Boiling needs a working stove and fuel, and during a blackout many homes have neither. It also needs water to boil. The filter needs nothing and works on the murky water you actually find.

What exactly does it remove?

Bacteria, protozoa, sediment and microplastics. Not viruses, chemicals, heavy metals or salt water. Exact numbers will be on our Lab Report page once the independent test is published.

When will the lab report be published?

The filter is with an independent laboratory now. We will publish the full report, including anything that did not go our way, on our Lab Report page. Enter your email at the bottom of this page and we will send it to you the day it is out.

Will it expire in my emergency kit?

Stored dry and unused it keeps for years. Use it once, blow it clear, let it dry, and it goes back in the drawer.

How many should I buy for my family?

One per person, one for the vehicle, one spare. Two is one, one is none. A family of four keeps five. If your parents live alone, add their set, that is the top tier above.

Can my kids use it?

Yes. Nothing to assemble or prime. Put the end in the water and drink, or fill a bottle for them.

I live in the city. Do I really need this?

City water is the one that depends on electric pumps. Texas 2021, Asheville 2024 and every boil-water notice in between hit homes with a tap, not homes with a well.

How do I clean and maintain it?

Blow back through the mouthpiece after use, shake out the water, let it dry with the cap off. No tools, no replacement parts.

What is your return policy?

60-day money-back guarantee. Send it back, we refund the order. The only way you lose is not having it when you need it.

You'll never know when. You'll know you were ready.

One filter per person, one for the vehicle. Free filters are applied automatically at checkout, and you have 60 days to change your mind.
